The Latest Fantastic Beasts Has Started Filming & Plot Details Are Revealed
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them was the prequel come spinoff from the smash-hit Harry Potter film franchise that gave Potterheads an even greater look at the universe in which the boy wizard inhabits. Set some years before Harry's birth, the first film took place in 1927 and was to be the beginning of a series of five that will finish around 1945.
How do we know this? Well, along other small pieces of detail Warner Bros. announced some interesting things about the upcoming sequel as it begins filming and this was just one of the tidbits that came out. So what else can film fans expect to see?
Well, one thing we already know is that Jude Law will be playing a young Albus Dumbledore in the film. Dumbledore, you may remember as the headmaster at Harry Potter's school, Hogwarts. However, this is pre his career in magical education. Played by acting royalty Richard Harris and then latterly Michael Gambon after Harris passed away, he is often portrayed as an elderly man with a long flowing, white beard and this will be the first time fans get to see him as a young man. And who is going to play this icon of the series? None other than Oscar-nominated Brit actor Jude Law, who can currently be seen in HBO's The Young Pope series. Directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 will see Eddie Redmayne reprise his role as "magizoologist" Newt Scamander.
"Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I've long admired and I'm looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him," said Yates in a statement. "I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as JK Rowling reveals this very different time in his life." Born in South London in 1972, Law has received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley and 2003's Cold Mountain.
With Johnny Depp returning to his role as the villainous Gellert Grindelwald and Oscar Winner Eddie Redmayne continuing on as protagonist Newt Scamander, the stellar cast is shaping up to continue the phenomenal success of the franchise and fans will be eager to see all three share time on screen.
But this is all old news, what more has been revealed? Well, Law's Dumbledore will be teaming up with Redmayne's Scamander as they try to take down Depp's Grindelwald as he tries to escape from the magical authorities who caught him in the last film whilst also attracting other wizards to his villainous cause.
With a new storyline comes new characters as well and we have found out that we will be introduced to Newt's older brother Theseus as well as Newt's lost love Leta Lestrange, played by Zoe Kravitz. Perhaps more intriguingly is the return of Ezra Miller's haunted character Credence who was presumed dead after an Obscurus burst forth from him. That being said it will be in a "mysterious way", whatever that could mean.
There will also be a wizarding circus that plays a role in the film as Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays its owner called Skender, and Claudia Kim will be one of the circus's "featured attractions". What's more is that, although the last film was set in New York, the latest will take place across Paris and London as well and will also have some surprising nods to Harry Potter.
So, what more could we want from the new film? Are you excited or is this whole franchise just another cynical way of milking fans for their money? Let us know in the comments below.
