10 Celebrities Who Prefer Their Own Company

Let's face it: Being rich and famous would be awesome. You'd have all the love and adulation in the world to feed your fragile ego and the best stylists to make you look great. Oh, and you'd also be stinkin' rich.

But like anything in life, there's a catch, the main one being you wouldn't be able to lead a normal life, so maybe that's why some celebrities decided to forgo massive entourages and stick to themselves instead.

Here, we take a look at 10 famous A-listers who like to be alone.

1. Zayn Malik

After admitting in past interviews that he never really felt that One Direction was him, the British-born Muslim singer decided to do his own thing and release a number one solo album, which pretty much pissed off his former bandmates, especially after he criticised the band's overtly commercial appeal.

Still, not many were actually surprised by Malik's words, and if you're a die-hard Directioner, you'll know that Zayn was the shy and "mysterious one", never much caring for the attention, something he basically confirmed when he tweeted, "I'm a loner."

2. Justin Bieber

He's probably the most recognisable person on the planet, and in the words of one of his hit songs, his "life is a movie, and everyone's watching,' so you can't exactly blame the Biebs for feeling a tad overwhelmed by all the attention.

Living by himself in his Los Angeles pad, the singer has been photoed hiking alone in the Hollywood Hills and was even caught by one TMZ camera lunching by himself. Hardly scandalous stuff, but it certainly proves that being absurdly famous takes its toll on you.

3. Kristen Stewart

She gained a reputation for being a moody teenage girl in the Twilight series, but Kristen Stewart has since prospered and landed many high-profile roles in recent years, but it's unlikely you'll see her making an appearance in Taylor Swift's Squad anytime soon.

Instead, Stewart is a natural introvert and prefers her own company to that of other Hollywood stars because she is painfully shy and still finds it hard to talk about herself in interviews, and rather than having the traits of many actors (confidence, delusions of grandeur) Stewart is pretty awkward, leading many to dub her the "anti-celebrity."

4. Emma Watson

Like Stewart, Emma Watson made a name for herself in one of cinema's most successful movie franchises when she played the academic overachiever Hermione Grainger in the Harry Potter series, and it appears J.K Rowling's fictional character has rubbed off on Watson because she now inhabits many of Grainger's characteristics.

Obtaining a degree from Brown University, Watson rarely ever goes out to clubs and prefers to work with the UN to help promote feminist causes and also has an ardent love for literature.

In her very own words, "Have you seen Quiet by Susan Cain? ... It discusses how [extroverts] in our society are bigged up so much, and if you’re anything other than an [extrovert] you’re made to think there’s something wrong with you. That’s like the story of my life. Coming to realize that about myself was very empowering, because I had felt like Oh my god, there must be something wrong with me, because I don’t want to go out and do what all my friends want to do.”

5. Johnny Depp

He's been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent years, so you can probably expect Mr. Depp to revert to his loner tendencies and become a bit of a recluse. After all, when you've been a global superstar for as long as Depp has, things will undoubtedly start to grind your gears, and we expect the novelty of being rich and famous has long vanished.

Admitting that he was painfully shy at school and still is, he also admits that he prefers to study people around him instead of others observing him. Looks like you choose the wrong job, Johnny!

6. J.K. Rowling

Like many writers, J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter fame isn't too keen on attention, especially when she happens to one of the most famous writers on earth, so it's understandable that this awe-inspiring celebrity is a bit of an introvert.

And just think about it. How many hours do you reckon it took Rowling to complete those novels? A long time sitting at a desk by herself, that's for sure. But like most writers, Rowling doesn't mind her company, which in itself is almost a necessity should anyone wish to write a novel.

7. Christina Aguilera

She may be able to dazzle thousands of spectators in sold-out arenas, but when it comes to being a regular person away from performing, Aguilera finds it hard to adapt.

According to a journalist from Marie Claire, she is the complete opposite of what most expect. “If it weren’t for her bleach-blonde hair, I wouldn’t have recognized her,” Gaby Wood said before her piece on the star was published in early 2010. “Because, besides being petite, she is, it seems, shy. She tells me that she has always been ‘intense and introverted’ and that, as a result, she’s felt like an outsider her entire life.”

8. Harry Styles

Everyone's favourite member of One Direction is now riding solo after a crazy six years with the chart-topping boyband, but instead of being a social butterfly, Styles is a self-confessed mama's boy and prefers to be alone at times.

In a tell-all interview with Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, One Direction's former security guard even described Harry as a bit of a "loner", saying,  “He wants to talk but doesn’t want to make conversation. You have to do all the talking. He just wants a bit of company. He’s always worried about his an exceptional. Last year I had an arm wrestle with Harry, and he saw the star tattoo on my bicep. A couple of weeks later he had exactly the same one. I think he was a little embarrassed when I teased him about it. They’re all quite tight, but Harry’s a little bit of a loner."

9. Keanu Reeves

It's one of the paparazzi's most famed images, that of a disconsolate-looking Keanu sitting alone on a New York City park bench eating a sandwich, and the image itself has since spawned countless memes, and one could argue the image is fairly representative of his introverted ways.

According to his Constantine co-star Shia Labeouf, Keanu was so cut off from the rest of the cast that Shia presumed Reeves might not have many human friends at all, while others have also noted that his want for a normal life has led him to one of humble solitude.

10. James Franco

It's well documented that James Franco is highly intelligent, with an IQ score and a plethora of degrees that would put most seasoned academics to shame, so it's of little surprise that Franco likes to kick it by himself at times.

He's an intense artist and needs his alone time, with script writing, studying, teaching, acting and directing indies taking up almost all his time.

Interestingly, Franco has admitted that he battles his introvert-ness by teaching art to others
