10 Celebrities Who Were Born With Silver Spoons In Their Mouths
Becoming a star is often one of the only ways out of poverty for many aspiring performers, though for the limited few artists that do make it, not every story is a rags-to-riches one. In fact, in many cases, the stars we know and love were already rich thanks to being raised by wealthy parents because the reality is that making it in Hollywood requires a lot of money and industry contacts.
After all, most parents are in no position to move their careers to Los Angeles to accommodate their children's dreams, and even fewer will be in the privileged position of knowing famous movie producers and record label executives. However, some of these celebrities' parents were.
Here are 10 celebrities who were born with silver spoons in their mouths.
1. Ariana Grande
While there's no denying the pop star's incredible vocal abilities, Grande was raised in an affluent area of Boca Raton, Florida, and was by no means poor. Instead, her parents are extremely successful business people, with her mom the chief executive officer of Hose-McCann Communications while her father, Edward, is even richer.
An influential player in the world of graphic design, he heads his own company and also owns Ibi Designs Inc. The company boasts a litany of high-profile clients, including Eddie Murphy and the toy company, FAO Schwarz.
2. Miley Cyrus
This one is fairly obvious as anyone who knows their country music will be aware that Miley is the daughter of the Achy Breaky Heart hitmaker, Bill Ray Cyrus. Being born not only into wealth but fame also meant that those all-too-invaluable industry contacts would never be a problem for a young and aspiring Miley.
That said, she still had to capitalize on her good start in life with talent, and she certainly has that in abundance, but her father's megastardom in the country music scene as well as dabbling in acting certainly played a part in getting Miley those Disney auditions and eventual contacts in music.
3. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift's rise to the top of show business, while aided by her natural virtuosity and awe-inspiring self-determination wasn't without a parental help-in-hand. Indeed, both her parents worked in finance, with her father Scott Kingsley Swift funding her initial move to the country music capital, Nashville when she was only 14 thanks to his earnings as a prominent Merrill Lynch financial adviser.
The parents, who are widely rumoured to be millionaires in their own right, meant Taylor Swift's road to the top was anything but a rags-to-riches story.
4. Mike Posner
He famously took a pill in Ibiza to show Avici he was cool, but Mike Posner, like many rich kids, probably tried harder than most to prove his cool credentials when young considering that his lawyer and pharmacist parents raised him in the affluent northern suburb of Detroit, Southfield.
Despite his upper-middle class background, Posner befriended local rapper Big Sean, and both have since forged successful careers in the music industry.
5. Kristen Stewart
From promising child actress to teen megastar in the Twilight franchise, Kirsten Stewart seems to have finally found her footing thanks to a host of well-received indy performances in films like Personal Shopper and The Runaways. Of course, getting your break as a child actress often means your parents have the right connections, with Stewart's parents already seasoned Hollywood players before she was even born.
Prominent figures behind the camera, her dad is a respected stage manager and TV producer while her mom is a script supervisor and director.
6. Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal
Like Kirsten Stewart, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal have parents that work in the industry.
Their mother Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal's connections as a screenwriter and director certainly played a part in getting them earlier roles, and even she was born into wealth, being the child of two prominent doctors in New York. The dad, Stephen, is also a film director, and if you're growing up in Los Angeles and have two directors for parents, it would almost seem silly not to entertain the idea of breaking into such a lucrative industry.
Everybody's favourite South Korean pop star (we don't know many others) became a worldwide sensation when his song Gangnam Style went viral on YouTube. Catchy thanks to its easy to follow lyrics, the single bought Psy a new Western fanbase, but few of those fans know the actual meaning of the song's title.
Interestingly, Gangnam is the name of the affluent suburb in South Korea where Psy's parents raised him, and many South Koreans often see it as their equivalent of Beverly Hills. It should come as no surprise then that his father is an executive chairman of DI Corporation while his mother owns a chain of restaurants.
8. Lindsay Lohan
The once multi-millionaire child actress never seemed to build on the momentum of a once glistening career, and it seemed to peak after her role in Mean Girls, a film which also starred Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried. Plagued in recent years by drug and alcohol abuse, stints in both rehab and jail have all but ruined Lohan's Hollywood career, which just goes to show that even the wealthiest of bringings can still spell trouble.
Yes, while Lohan made her millions at a very young age, both her parents were already wealthy themselves, with Lindsay's mum experiencing some success as a singer and dancer while her father worked on Wall Street.
9. Edward Norton
Undoubtedly one of the finest screen actors of his generation, quite how Edward Norton hasn't won an Academy Award is anybody's guess, but it isn't hard to guess how he managed to afford his acting training classes at Yale University. The answer is: he didn't- because his parents paid for it all.
His father was a prominent environmental lawyer and conservation advocate, which is partly what inspired Edward Norton to become so heavily involved in environmental charities alongside fellow actor and friend Leonardo Di Caprio. Impressively, Norton's father also served as a federal prosecutor in the Carter administration, though it is his maternal grandad who's responsible for the family fortune. James Rouse's company, aptly named, The Rouse Company, played a significant role in the early beginnings of the American retail experience, and after Norton's father passes, his blockbuster inheritance will be more substantial than any salary garnered from his film roles.
10. Gwyneth Paltrow
The all-American blonde actress has a tendency to tell everyone how down-to-earth she is, despite calling her daughter Apple and starting a blog detailing all the middle-class things you can do to help overcome everyday struggles. But that shouldn't be surprising as Gwyneth comes from a life of privilege.
In fact, both her parents were a pretty big deal in Hollywood when growing up. Her mother is Blythe Danner, the famed actress while her father Bruce Paltrow is a producer. With money not being an issue, they sent their little girl to the prestigious Spence School in New York, while her godfather happens to be none other than the legendary film director, Steven Spielberg.
