Despite often having smaller budgets and lesser known stars, German films can reach the same storytelling heights that their stateside counterparts can but don't usually gain the same recognition. 1. Good Bye Lenin!
A dark and twisted comedy that plays on Germany's complicated history as it is set just as the Berlin wall has fallen and the reunification of East and West is in the process of happening. A young man's mother has suffered a heart attack and been put into a coma for the past 9 months so has missed the fact that the wall has fallen and the two countries will soon be one again. However, living on the Eastern side, she was an active communist party member but her doctor has warned her son not to let her become too excited or stressed otherwise it could bring on another heart attack. Worried about his mother's health, he sets in motion a plan to keep her believing, East Germany is still as it was before her coma.
